第一篇：The fox and the goat狐貍與山羊
By an unlucky chance a Fox fell into a deep well from which he could not get out.
一只不走運(yùn)的狐貍，失足掉到了井里。井很深，他無(wú)法跳出來(lái)。
A Goat passed by shortly afterwards, and asked the Fox what he was doing down there.
一只山羊經(jīng)過這里，便問狐貍在井下做什么。
"Oh, have you not heard?"said the Fox, "there is going to be a great drought, so I jumped down here in order to be sure to have water by me. Why don't you come down too?"
狐貍說(shuō)：“哦，你沒有聽說(shuō)嗎?這里將要大旱，因此我跳進(jìn)來(lái)確保我自己有水喝，為什么你不下來(lái)一起呢?”
The Goat thought well of this advice, and jumped down into the well.
山羊相信了狐貍的話，就真的跳進(jìn)井里。
But the Fox immediately jumped on her back, and by putting his foot on her long horns managed to jump up to the edge of the well.
狐貍立即跳上山羊的背，又一跳，跳上了井沿。
"Good-bye, friend," said the Fox, "remember next time, never trust the advice of a man in difficulties."
“再見，朋友，”狐貍說(shuō)，“記住，不要相信一個(gè)身陷麻煩的人的建議。”
【寓意】 處于困境之中的人為了擺脫困境，往往不惜犧牲別人的利益，所以他們的建議常常是不可信的。
第二篇：Look at someone with new eyes/knock the socks off someone刮目相看
Lv Meng (lǚ méng 呂蒙) was a general of Wu during the Three Kingdoms Period (三國(guó)時(shí)代,220-280AD).
三國(guó)時(shí)期(220-280)，吳國(guó)有一個(gè)叫呂蒙的將軍
He was born in such a poor family that he did not get any chance to go to the school when he was a child.
呂蒙出生在窮苦人家，小時(shí)候沒有機(jī)會(huì)上學(xué)。
However, there was still less time for reading when he served in the army after he grew up.
長(zhǎng)大后他參了軍，看書的時(shí)間更少了。
Once the king of Wu summoned Lv Meng and said to him, "Since you are now a general in power, you had better read some books to widen your horizon."
一次，吳國(guó)的皇帝召見呂蒙，對(duì)他說(shuō)："現(xiàn)在你是大將軍了，應(yīng)該多看看書開闊眼界。"
Lv Meng answered, "I am so busy with military affairs that I am afraid I have little time to read."
呂蒙回答道："軍中的事務(wù)這么忙，我恐怕沒有時(shí)間讀書。"
The King said, "Are you busier than I am? Even I often find time to read books on the art of war and gain much benefit from them. To read more about the experience left by our ancestors will make you progress."
吳國(guó)的皇帝說(shuō)："你難道比我還忙嗎?我常常抽空閱讀兵書，從中得到了不少好處。多看看前人的經(jīng)驗(yàn)之談，你會(huì)有更大的進(jìn)步。"
Lv Meng then did according to what the king said. He concentrated himself on reading history and military writings.
呂蒙接受了皇帝的建議，從此開始專心閱讀，看了很多歷史和軍事書籍。
On day, Military Governor Lu Su visited Lv Meng and was surprised to find that Lv Meng had become very knowledgeable.
一天，主帥魯肅來(lái)拜訪呂蒙，驚訝地發(fā)現(xiàn)呂蒙變得很有學(xué)問。
Lu Su, who held Lv Meng in contempt earlier, said, "I did not expect that you would know so much besides fighting! You are not the one you used to be!"
曾經(jīng)非常輕視呂蒙的魯肅說(shuō)："我以為你只會(huì)打仗，沒想到你這么博學(xué)。你已經(jīng)不是過去的那個(gè)呂蒙了!"
Lv Meng replied, "You should look at a person with new eyes even only after a three days' separation."
呂蒙回答道："即使你和別人只分開了三天，三天后再遇到他時(shí)也不能用三天前的老眼光來(lái)看待他。"
Today, when a person does something that causes others to see him differently, we can say that people "look at him with new eyes."
今天，當(dāng)一個(gè)人做了某些事，令別人另眼相待時(shí)，我們就可以說(shuō)，對(duì)他“刮目相看”了
【中外差別】
英語(yǔ)中有一個(gè)與“刮目相看”意義大致相近的短語(yǔ)，叫做“knock the socks off”，直譯就是“把~的襪子都撞掉了”，也就是讓某人刮目相看的意思啦。同樣的，如果別人讓你刮目相看的話，你也可以說(shuō)：“Hey，dude~You really knocked my socks off!”
【成語(yǔ)活用】
Next quarter I really want to knock the socks off the competition.
下一季我非常希望可以讓競(jìng)爭(zhēng)對(duì)手刮目相看。
