　　Good Evening, my fellow Americans.

　　Tonight I want to talk to you on a subject of deep concern to all Americans and to many people in all parts of the world, the war in Vietnam.

　　I believe that one of the reasons for the deep division about Vietnam is that many Americans have lost confidence in what their Government has told them about our policy.

　　The American people cannot and should not be asked to support a policy which involves the overriding issues of war and peace unless they know the truth about that policy.Tonight, therefore, I would like to answer some of the questions that I know are on the minds of many of you listening to me.How and why did America get involved in Vietnam in the first place?How has this administration changed the policy of the previous Administration?What has really happened in the negotiations in Paris and the battlefront in Vietnam?What choices do we have if we are to end the war?What are the prospects for peace? Now let me begin by describing the situation I found when I was inaugurated on Jan.

　　20th: The war had been going on for four years.

　　Thirty-one thousand Americans had been killed in action.

　　The training program for the South Vietnamese was behind schedule.

　　Five hundred forty-thousand Americans were in Vietnam with no plans to reduce the number.

　　No progress had been made at the negotiations in Paris and the United States had not put forth a comprehensive peace proposal.The war was causing deep division at home and criticism from many of our friend, as well as our enemies, abroad.In view of these circumstances, there were some who urged withdrawal of all American forces.

　　From a political standpoint, this would have been a popular and easy course to follow.

　　After all, we became involved in the war while my predecessor was in office.

　　I could blame the defeat, which would be the result of my action, on him -- and come out as the peacemaker.

　　Some put it to me quite bluntly: this was the only way to avoid allowing Johnson’s war to become Nixon’s war.But I had a greater obligation than to think only of the years of my Administration, and of the next election.

　　I had to think of the effect of my decision on the next generation, and on the future of peace and freedom in America, and in the world.Let us all understand that the question before us is not whether some Americans are for peace and some Americans are against peace.

　　The question at issue is not whether Johnson’s war becomes Nixon’s war.

　　i never forget last year’s school sports meeting. 1500-meter race was one of the most exciting. before the race, my best friend xiaoshan had a goal to be no. 1. as a matter a fact, she is not so strong, but she is a sunny girl. she is active and likes doing sports. what’s more, she tries her best to achieve the goal, but i wonder if she is able to be the champion. there were eight players in the race. on the first lap, she was in the sixth place; on the second lap, the took the fourth place, she went on running and she ran toward her goal, the goal in her mind, look! on the last lap, she was the first to pass the finishing line, she was the winner. oh, great! she made it! congratulations!

　　at that time, i knew a goal was so necessary and important. i made a decision : “i want to take part in the english speaking competition held in my school. what’s more, i will try my best to be no.1 in the competition as my best friend xiaoshan did in sports meet. ” i am sure of it. i still remembered what my english teacher said to us. he said :“if anyone took the first place in our school english speaking competition, he or she will be chose to take the competition held in jinjiang. it’s a great honor!”

　　though i can do well in my english written exams, however, to be honest, i am a little afraid to speak english in public. my english teacher often encourages me: “raoning, your voice sounds so beautiful, be brave, you will succeed.” from then on, i kept a goal in mind. i said to myself aloud: stick to your goal and you will win. and then i try my best to improve my oral english and dare to speak either in class or after class. at last, i took part in the competition and became no. 1. i am chose to take part in the next year’s english speaking competition held in jinjiang. i said to myself aloud again: come on! you will win.

　　how time flies! today i am a lucky dog. i am very honored to give you a speech. i hope everyone has a dream! in fact, we should work hard to make our dream come true. otherwise it will become day dream. at the same time, i hope everyone has a goal in mind, because the goal is the first step to success. come on, my friends, goal, goal, goal, success, success, success!

　　It is said that the symbol of an excellent university is not mersured by unique architecture but by the number of masters it owns.however,for my part,a harmonious atmosphere is an essential factor:because her reputation is formed both by knowledge of the masters and creativity of the students.but what is called harmony on college campus?

　　In my opinion,a harmonious campus is firstly an academic campus where the students are eager to learn ,the professors are dilligent to do researches and instruct knowledges.of course,a dense cultural atmosphere can be very benificial.

　　Secondly,the relationship among teachers and students is harmonious.former high school teachers were tough with us while our college instructors are very benign and friendly.besides learning from them,we can also consult them about daily trouble and matters we confront.with their help,we open our minds to new appraoches and enlarge our insight.

　　Thirdly,a harmonious relationship among schoolmates can be helpful as well. each student should not only show their individuality but slao display their unity.for instance,when studying in the library,we'r supposed to keep quiet in order not to disturb others.when we'r finishd with our meals,we should clean up the tables. also a close relation amid roomates can make us feel home.esp. in china ,six or four students come from different parts with different daily habits have to share the same dorm.so it is crucial to build a harmonious dormitory by keeping/setting up the same routine schedual.

　　Lastly,harmonious atmosphere is not something imposed on us but something we need to cultivate,which will definitely bring more vitality to the campus.

　　All in all, actions speak louder than words.we must make endeavors to refresh the atmosphere and each positive effort will increase the harmony on campus.a harmonious campus is a cradle where we become social and knowledgeable.thereby, it is remained for us to create such a harmonious campus.thus we can feel warm,inspiring and live merrily in harmony.

　　Nineteen years ago, almost to the day, we lost three astronauts in a terrible accident on the ground. But we've never lost an astronaut in flight. We've never had a tragedy like this. And perhaps we've forgotten the courage it took for the crew of the shuttle. But they, the Challenger Seven, were aware of the dangers, but overcame them and did their jobs brilliantly. We mourn seven heroes: Michael Smith, Dick Scobee, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe. We mourn their loss as a nation together.

　　And I want to say something to the schoolchildren of who were watching the live coverage of the shuttle's take-off. I know it's hard to understand, but sometimes painful things like this happen. It's all part of the process of exploration and discovery. It's all part of taking a chance and expanding man's horizons. The future doesn't belong to the fainthearted; it belongs to the brave. The Challenger crew was pulling us into the future, and we'll continue to follow them.

　　We'll continue our quest in space. There will be more shuttle flights and more shuttle crews and, yes, more volunteers, more civilians, more teachers in space. Nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue.
