        Accepting a Job Offer

        Dear Mrs. Mellish:

It was certainly wonderful news when you called this afternoon to offer me the position as assistant buyer for Greenley Corp. Please consider this letter my formal acceptance. I am pleased to accept your offer at a salary of $29,000 annually. As we agreed, my starting date will be July 28 to enable me to finish a summer computer class that will enhance my skills for Greenley Corp.

I also understand that I will receive full company pay and benefits during the 12-week training program and that I am considered probationary during that time.

Thank you again, Mr. Shaw, for offering me this wonderful opportunity, and do let me know if I can do anything in advance of my start date to facilitate the paperwork, or if there are any areas you'd like me to be reading up on.

What a delight it will be to work with you and the Greenley's team!

        Sincerely, Jane Oakley

Withdrawing from the job search after accepting another job offer

        Dear Ms. Clark:

I want to express my sincerest appreciation to you for including me in the interview process as you seek candidates for your magazine’s Editorial Assistant position. I have enjoyed meeting with the members of your staff and think you have an outstanding operation.

However, as I explained when we spoke this morning, I respectfully withdraw from consideration for your position. I have decided to accept another employment offer which I believe very closely matches my current skills and career goals. I wish you and the staff of Green Magazine the best of success.

I hope we will have the chance to visit at the upcoming Magazine Writers’ Conference. Tha =nk you again for the opportunity to explore career possibilities with your office.

        Sincerely, Joy Collins

        Declining a job offer

        Dear Dr. Swietzer,

Thank you very much for your telephone call and letter offering me the position of Assistant Project Coordinator with the Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs. While I believe firmly in the mission of your organization and appreciate the challenging opportunity you offer, I have had another offer which I believe more closely matches my current career goals and interests. Therefore, although it was a difficult decision, as I explained when we spoke by phone this morning, I must decline your offer. I do appreciate all the courtesy and hospitality extended to me by your office, and I wish you well in your endeavors.

In the position I have accepted with Public Policy Watch, I will occasionally be on Capitol Hill to attend hearings and monitor legislation, so I hope we can get together again and talk about common interests.

Best regards, (your signature) Chris Hancock

Declining an Offer by Kim Isaacs Monster Resume Expert

With unemployment reaching record highs, many job seekers feel lucky to receive any job offer. But whether the compensation is too low, the location is inconvenient or the job isn't the right fit, sometimes you just need to say, "No thanks."

In a stress-filled job search, it's tempting to verbally turn down an offer and skip writing a letter, but it's more professional to write a formal letter to decline the offer. Keep these four tips in mind as you write your letter:

        Be Prompt.

As soon as you've made your decision, call the hiring manager and write your letter declining the offer. The company will need to offer the position to some one else, and you don't want to hold up the process.

        Be Courteous.

Your letter should be professional and courteous. You may be turning down this position, but you might want to be considered for future opportunities. Savvy job seekers use every possible chance to network, so thank each person with whom you interviewed and wish them and their company continued success.

        Be Diplomatic.

If you've received another, more generous offer, avoid mentioning the details of the position you're accepting. Let the hiring manager know that you were impressed by the company and carefully considered the offer, but you are accepting a position that better suits your career objectives. Be Concise. This is not the place to tout your credentials and career accomplishments. The company already realizes your value, so keep your letter short and sweet.
